Fig 3

6 Rotary cut each piece of patchwork into five 81⁄2in (21.6cm) squares as shown by the red lines in Fig 4A. It is a tight squeeze to get five squares out of the patchwork width, so cut as economically as you can. Begin by trimming off 1⁄4in (6mm) from the straightest end, leaving a little of the printed selvedge on the strip – this will disappear into a patchwork seam. Make sure you are cutting the squares accurately, with the patchwork seams parallel to the ruler (Fig 4B).

Sewing the Square-in-a-Square Blocks

7 Using the strips cut previously in step 2 and 1⁄4in (6mm) seams throughout, arrange and sew the block as shown in Fig 5. Sew two 21⁄2in (6.4cm) strips on the opposite sides of the centre square first, then sew two matching 41⁄2in (11.4cm) strips to the other sides. Continue sewing the block by adding the next set of strips to make the next square. The strips for each square should match. Try alternating light and dark sets of strips. Press all seams towards the outside of the block. Make nine blocks in total.
